Laki Craters

Climb aboard a Super Jeep and discover breathtaking, off-the-beaten-path locations in Iceland’s South and Southern Highlands. This tour takes you to the stunning craters of Lakagígar and Tjarnargígur, the majestic Fagrifoss waterfall, and the dramatic Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon.

Your adventure begins and ends in the charming town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a historic and picturesque settlement. You’ll be picked up in a Super Jeep that seats up to twelve, ensuring a comfortable and personalized experience. Sit back and soak in the mountain views while your local driver-guide shares fascinating insights into the history and geology of Lakagígar.

Itinerary

After a complimentary pickup at your hotel, we head straight to the Laki Craters, arriving around 10:30 am.

Mount Laki rises about 200 meters (660 ft) above the surrounding landscape and sits at the center of a dramatic row of craters. You’ll have approximately 2.5 hours to explore, with plenty of time to hike the trail to the summit for breathtaking panoramic views or take the interpretive trail into the vast crater next to Laki. If you’d prefer not to hike, your guide can drive you to the top of nearby hills offering similar stunning vistas.

Next, we take a short drive to Tjarnargígur (Tjarnar Crater), which contains a serene water-filled basin. It’s an easy walk to the viewing platform overlooking the crater. Our next hike takes about an hour—while not overly challenging, it features an uneven path and starts with a descent down steep lava steps into the crater. If you’d rather skip the hike, you can return to the parking lot and ride in the Super Jeep to meet the group at the end of the trail. Alternatively, you can take a short, easy stroll into a nearby crater or relax in the Super Jeep.

Afterward, we continue driving along the line of craters, navigating a narrow track through the lava field to complete the circle around Lakagígar.

Fagrifoss and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

On the way back, there are still more hidden gems to discover. One of the highlights is Fagrifoss, a secluded waterfall whose name literally means “beautiful falls.” We’ll stop here for about 20–30 minutes, giving you time to explore and take in the scenery.

Our final stop is the breathtaking Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, often hailed as one of the most beautiful canyons in the world. You’ll walk along the higher edge, gazing down at the vibrant blue river flowing through the lush, green cliffs below.

We’ll return to Klaustur around 5 pm, where you’ll be dropped off at your original pickup point.
