Laki Craters
Jump aboard a Super Jeep and see some spectacular, unique, little-travelled locations in Iceland’s South and Southern Highlands. This tour will show you the craters of Lakagígar and Tjarnargígur, the waterfall Fagrifoss, and the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. This tour begins and ends in the southern town of Kirkjubæklaustur, a historic and beautiful settlement. You will be picked up in a Super Jeep with a maximum capacity of twelve, to help ensure the excursion is comfortable and personalised. Relax and enjoy the mountain view while your local driver guide gives you informative comments about the history and geology of Lakagígar.
Itinerary
After the complimentary pickup at your hotel we drive straight to Laki Craters. Arrive at Laki around 10:30am. Mt. Laki is about 200 meters (660ft) higher than the surrounding area and is located in the middle of the row of craters. There you will stop for about 2.5 hours. You have plenty of time to hike the trail on top of Laki for a magnificent view and walk the interpretation trail into the huge crater next to Laki. If you are not comfortable hiking to the top of Laki, your guide will drive you to the top of some nearby hills where you will attain similar panoramic view.
After your hike at Laki, a short drive to your next stop at Tjarnargígur (Tjarnarcrater) which has water inside. It is a brief easy walk to the platform at the huge crater. The next hike takes an hour, it is not very difficult, but it is an uneven track and it begins with steep lava steps down into the crater. You have the option to come back to the parking lot and ride in the super jeep to the end of the trail were we pick up the others. You can take a short, easy walk into the crater close by or just relax in the super jeep. After, continue your drive and follow the row of craters into the lava field on a narrow track and close the circle around Lakagigar.
Fagrifoss and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
On the way back you will still have more secret places to explore. Among the places you will stop is the hidden waterfall, Fagrifoss for about 20-30 minutes for a bit of exploration. The name of the waterfall, Fagrifoss translates literally to ‘beautiful falls’.
Your last stop is Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. It is safe to say that the majestic Fjaðrárgljúfur is a breathtaking and unique canyon often referred to as the most beautiful one in the world. You’ll walk along its higher end, looking down into the stunning azure river rushing below, and across to its verdant cliffs.
You will be back to Klaustur around 5pm where you will be dropped off at your original pick up point.

Good to know: There is a flush toilet (WC) at Laki and at our stop at Tjarnargigur as well as at the end of the tour at Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. There is a dry toilet at Fagrifoss.
You can fill your water bottles at Laki and at Tjarnargigur.
